Lyrical abstraction

Gestural and instinctive, they embraced an abstract practice that was defined in the 1950s as lyrical or even calligraphic. Hartung, Soulages, Van Velde, and Debré are the leaders of this movement. The first two mentioned will further push the boundaries by working on immense formats that demand significant physical involvement from the artist, placing the painter 'within the canvas.' The term 'lyrical,' used to describe this tendency in abstraction, refers to the artist's inner momentum capable of evoking emotion in the spectator through 'forms' that, however, do not 'represent' anything.
