Paul Cézanne (1839-1906 France)

More cultural and artistic informations about the painter

* * *

Main works :

La Montagne Sainte-Victoire, Nature morte aux pommes et aux oranges, Vue de l'Estaque

Artistic movements :

Impressionism.

Inspiration, influence :

Delacroix, Courbet, Manet, then very influenced by his contemporary and friend, Pissaro.

His contemporaries :

What qualifies Cézanne : he is the most difficult Impressionists to approach... Until Dali who qualified him as "worse French painter having ever existed" ... His generation (the Impressionists) recognized him him when the critics and the public stayed away from him. Maybe he was the most modern Impressionists, maybe also the most inflexible !

To keep in mind :

Paul Cézanne wanted (and looked for all his life) to absolve of the drawing (and of the twilight) while maintaining the volume, by the only strength of colors (and of their modulation in the light). It was his challenge !

To go further :

Obsessed by the representation of the nature, Paul Cézanne didn't want to flatter the eye of the spectator, but just to make real the passage from a plan to an other one, from a tone to an other one, and always without using the drawing (or the black line) to reach this goal. This is why his influence on the Cubists is important.
