If Monory is a figurative artist, he is a figurative artist who has tamed reality to give it back to us colored in blue, pink, or yellow like a dream with clean lines and an underlying threat. A painter of a sinking 20th century, conflict after conflict, into violence, Monory warns us as the lighthouse keeper seeing the waves approaching from afar.
Jacques MONORY was born in 1924.
After completing his training in Applied Arts (painting, graphic design, decoration), he worked for ten years at an art publisher specializing in books dedicated to photography.
It is there that this photographic universe collides with the previously studied knowledge and that the "Monory vision" is born. Mixing real images, drawn from modern and cinematographic culture, often imbued with underlying violence, he creates a new dimension of narration that finds its culmination in the early 1960s, with "Narrative Figuration," a movement that was in opposition to the abstract currents of the time, but also to the "Nouveau Réalistes" (Klein / César).
In Monory's work, which only uses colors as a prism allowing us to grasp reality in a different light, there is a chilling truth. Through images where weapons, accidents, and bombs burst forth like warning cries, Monory tells us that we have set in motion a world that we have long since lost control of, but that through his pinks and blues, we can perhaps, at least, become aware of it...
