It is after a serious depression that Niki de Saint-Phalle starts to paint, in the psychiatric hospital. Art Brut is her first mode of expression and her painting is compared, at the beginning, to the work of Jean Dubuffet.

His contemporaries

Jean Tinguely (her second spouse) and the New Realists with whom she shared Happenings and exhibitions (Ben, Restany, Klein or Christo).

To keep in mind

The Nanas, anthem to the free woman, round (the initial representations were inspired by pregnant women), joyful, dancing, moving, have managed to adhere to their time, embracing the joy of living in the 70s and also their happy activism.
