Katsukawa Shunsho, his teacher, but also the western art (brought in Nagasaki by the Dutch people) and particularly the contribution of the perspective.

His contemporaries :

His influence on the European artists is immense : Gauguin, Monet, Sisley. The compositions of the "The Old Man Mad About Drawing" (nickname of Hokusai) profoundly marked their visual universes.

One of the greatest illustrators. The simplicity of his work, his formal beauty, make him an iconic figure of the painting.

In 2015, a manga, "Miss Hokusai", tells the collaboration of Hokusaï and one of his daughters, O-Ei, who helped him in his work.
