Main works : "Lips stamped (1959)", the various declensions of "Campbell Soup Cans", the numerous variations on "Marilyn Monroe", and many other portraits of celebrities (Elvis, Mao Tse Tung, Mick Jagger, Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy) as well as self-portraits.
Artistic movements : Pop Art.
Inspiration, influence : Advertising, cinema... The image and its employment with commercial purpose is the main inspiration of Warhol.
His contemporaries : Andy Warhol's artistic interests are many ! Besides the painting Andy Warhol tried cinema, music and he practised a lot the social life ! He frequented all that New York counted of celebrities.
To keep in mind : Warhol wanted to be an artist, but especially rich and famous! He popularized an easy approach of the Art and was the big illustrator of his time, that happy period of the post-war years, with American Way of Life as main subject of his expression.
To go further : Andy Warhol opened the way to a whole series of artists (Haring or Basquiat) and accompanied three other American great masters of this time (Pollock, Rothko and Lichtenstein) by being the first creative American painter of an important pictorial movement of the XXth century.
